The fourth National Lego Robotics championship was held this year on the 1st of March 2008. The CEC sponsored this competition and TISA (The International School of Azerbaijan) organized training and championship. This year, 24 students from 11 schools took part in the competition. The students of the Gobustan settlement school #195 - Ismayil, Tofig, Leyla and Ibrahim - became the winners of the championship.
On 16th of March 2007, a science workshop titled "Energy in Our Lives" was facilitated by Steve Mesure, Director of the Floating Point Science Theatre and the Creative Science Consultancy Ltd, UK. Steve is renowned science communicator in UK, who uses a creative approach to science teaching. His workshops involve fun, excitement and audience participation. The "Energy in Our Lives" workshop covered significant topics about different sources of energy and their impact on our lives. More than 200 children from Baku secondary schools took part in this event.
During the summer of 2006 the CEC hosted day-long visits for students from the nearby communities of Sahil, Sangachal, Gobustan and Lokbatan so that they could build and programme robots from Lego. The sessions were facilitated jointly by CEC staff and young Challanger engineers from the Central Engineering Department of BP. Once the students mastered the basics they were encouraged to modify or optimise their robot's capabilities.
In November we followed this up by sponsoring a team to participate in the National Robotics tournament organized by British Council. Eight students from School No.139 in Lokbatan were trained for two months, meeting once a week with the Challenger engineers to practice tasks set by the organizers. In mid-December the Lokbatan-CEC team won the tournament which attracted 112 students from seven different schools, achieving the highest score in the three-year history of the award. With this victory came the chance to travel to the UK and participate in the UK Robotics championship finals held at the University of Birmingham. Seeing Big Ben, the London Eye and the Science Museum in London proved an unforgettable; none of the team had visited the UK before.
On 15th of December 2006 at the Caspian Energy Centre, Mike Grocott, a teacher from Callington Community College, delivered master class for Azerbaijani school students and teachers on topics such as "the Sun as a Star", "Stars and Galaxies", "Rockets and the Solar System".
